‘More ruthless’ – Postecoglou comments on wasteful Tottenham after Leicester draw

Tottenham Hotspur started their Premier League campaign with a disappointing draw against Leicester City tonight, and Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has been speaking after the game about the way his side failed to capitalise on their many opportunities in front of goal.

    Same old issues for Tottenham

A dominant first-half performance from Tottenham was crowned by a goal by Pedro Porro, with the full-back finding himself in the right place at the right time in the box to flick in a James Maddison cross.

Everything changed in the second half though, and Spurs were made to regret their missed chances when Jamie Vardy nodded home an equaliser to give Leicester fresh impetus.

Discussing the manner of the performance with the press after the match with Sky Sports Main Event (19/8/24), Spurs boss Postecoglou was rueful of the way his side let the points slip away after a strong first 45 minutes.

He said: “Disappointing night for us. First half was excellent and we controlled the game, but we were wasteful in front of goal. Second half was the same, we started well and once Leicester scored, the crowd lifted and we lost our composure.

“It was an issue we had last year as well. We need to keep working hard and be a bit more ruthless in front of goal At times we made poor decisions. When we are that dominant we should be out of sight.

“We do everything to score goals and we didn’t score. The dominance is great, but if you don’t score it’s meaningless. We have to be stronger in our mindset in the front third. To be that wasteful tonight is disappointing. We just weren’t clinical.”

    Postecoglou happy with effort levels

Touching on the players he put on the pitch and the style of play involved, Postecoglou insisted he had no issues with the effort levels of his team.

He added: “[The debutants] were all okay. It’s not our football or effort. To get results you need to be a lot more ruthless in the final third. If we don’t we won’t get the rewards our football should get. The responsibility is on me; that’s why you coach.”
