Martin admits he feared Downes would not re-sign for Saints in ‘dark’ moment

MANAGER Russell Martin revealed his fear that Flynn Downes would not re-sign for Saints amid interest in the midfielder from elsewhere. The St Mary’s side sealed the £18million transfer on Tuesday and broke the news at their PUMA kit launch in the evening.

Downes shocked supporters present as he modelled the 2024/25 home kit, in a move that had only been planned since 5pm that same day.

Premier League rivals Ipswich Town were prepared to match Southampton’s offer to West Ham but Downes opted to return to last season’s home.

Martin, speaking at St Mary’s, said: “There was a moment where me and Matt Gill thought it might not happen and it went dark for a few hours.

“Thankfully, Flynn saw the light and he’s now here. It’s been amazing, great seeing him back. It’s still so early in pre-season as well.

“I think everyone, the staff, the players and the fans are so pleased to see him. He is ours now and that is the best thing.”

Essex-born Hammers fan Downes joined Ipswich’s academy at the age of seven and went on to become the youngest captain in the club’s history.

He signed for Swansea City – where he played under Martin – in 2021 and admitted he wanted to leave Portman Road.

Martin had urged Saints supporters to be patient in their pursuit of Downes at AFC Totton’s Snows Stadium on Saturday, ahead of a pre-season friendly match.

The boss said: “It will take more time. We just have to be patient. I wanted him here last week, four weeks ago even.

“When someone is owned by another club, and they are a good player, they are always going to try and keep them.

“Hopefully, before the end of the summer, he will be in a Southampton shirt. If he’s not, I will cry myself to sleep.”
