Exclusive: 49-yr-old in pole position to land Leicester job

49-yr-old in pole position to land Leicester job.

Graham Potter is in “pole position” to become the new Leicester City manager, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed Leicester have held a long-term interest in Potter after previously trying to appoint him when Brendan Rodgers left the club in 2023.

The managerial job at the King Power Stadium became available when Enzo Maresca decided to leave the club for Chelsea despite securing promotion back to the Premier League last season.

A well-placed source told Football Insider on 10 June Potter is the slight favourite to land the Leicester job ahead of former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper.

The 49-year-old has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in April 2023 following an unconvincing spell at Stamford Bridge.

O’Rourke revealed Carlos Corberan is also in the frame for the job in case Potter decides it isn’t the right fit for him.

Potter was previously highly regarded following his successful three-year stint with Brighton before joining Chelsea in September 2022.

But his reign at Stamford Bridge didn’t last long as the Englishman struggled to implement his style of play and the results weren’t deemed to be good enough by Todd Boehly and the club’s hierarchy.

Potter has been biding his time since leaving west London more than a year ago, having turned down opportunities to return to management.

Despite Leicester securing promotion back to the top flight, O’Rourke expects it to be a tough job for whoever takes over at the King Power due to the club’s financial situation.

The Leicestershire club were charged with a breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in March and face a points deduction next season.
