‘Same old’ – Sam Allardyce hits out at David Moyes criticism ahead of West Ham exit

Sam Allardyce hits back at David Moyes criticism live on talkSPORT amid West Ham United exit. Allardyce has snapped back at the criticism aimed at David Moyes before the club confirmed his West Ham exit earlier this week.

The club have confirmed [5 May] that Moyes would be parting ways with the Hammers upon the expiration of his current contract at the end of the season, with Julen Lopetegui set to take his place.

The Scot had been under immense pressure throughout the 2023/24 campaign, mostly frustrating fans with his defensive style of play and poor results. Allardyce, however, has jumped to defend him.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Wednesday (8 May, 8:45am), the former Hammers boss said: “It’s the same old, same old. It hasn’t changed. Whoever the manager might be, it’s not about who they are, it’s about the performances and the results.

“The West Ham fans are brilliant when things are going well, but not so good when it isn’t going well. The difference between the two is off the scale. The criticism is there for all to listen to.

“But David’s record, and what he has done at West Ham was similar to me. I kept them up, kept them in the Premier League for three years, while he saved them and got them into Europe, winning a European trophy, but he is still being criticised.

“People keep talking about the style of football. I’ve watched West Ham many a time and I can’t see what they’re talking about, other than the fact he has done so much attacking recently that he has forgotten his true self.”

Moyes has certainly earned enough respect during his second spell in charge at the London Stadium to warrant a respectful send-off, though that has not happened.

Instead, Tim Steidten and David Sullivan have already lined up Lopetegui to take over from Moyes, which has been greeted with some very mixed reactions, especially the manner in which the situation has been dealt with.

The Premier League clash against Luton Town on Saturday 11 May will mark Moyes’ last home game, offering the fans an opportunity to show their love and respect for what he has achieved at the club.

While many agree that his style of play is not up to scratch, which has been showcased by some very disappointing results recently, that should not have tarnished his reputation at the London Stadium.

West Ham have him to thank for some incredible memories over the last four years and, especially the Europa Conference League title against Fiorentina last season.

In other West Ham United news, an ex-Tottenham star has reacted to recent Lopetegui news.
