On the back of Leicester City’s promotion, Alan Shearer has joked that the club will ‘get spanked every week’ once back in the Premier League.
City’s stay in the second tier of English football will officially only be one year long – this was confirmed last Friday night when promotion challengers Leeds United were defeated 4-0 by Queens Park Rangers. When the Foxes eventually had their turn to play on Monday night, they wrapped up the Championship title in style at Preston.
These events have brought with them joyous celebrations for the King Power Stadium faithful, including pundit Gary Lineker. The club’s former striker made sure to get the last word in on this week’s The Rest is Football podcast, which was recorded prior to the match at Deepdale.
On the back of discussing Bayer Leverkusen’s latest dramatic draw, he added: “But it wasn’t quite moment of the week – Leicester City are back where they belong!
“And a big thank you to QPR. Thank you from all of us Leicester fans for a very enjoyable experience on Friday with not too much stress.”
His gleeful reaction included poking fun at co-host Micah Richards, who he said had taunted him singing Leeds songs when Leicester’s form had recently dipped. He also denied to the former Man City full-back that he had promised to do something memorable, like the time he wore only underwear on Match of the Day after the Foxes’ Premier League title win, if the club got promoted this season.
That is when Shearer chipped in with his jibe, adding: “Micah, we’ll just bag all of this enthusiasm and happiness from Gazza because next season when they get their arses spanked every week.”
“I am enjoying it now. We can have a big celebration and then look forward to 10 months of absolute misery,” Lineker quipped in response. “Everyone desperately wants to get in the Premier League and then you get there and it’s like ’ah, are we ever gonna win a football match.”
