David Moyes tactics criticised as double-signing now mooted at West Ham United. Frank McAvennie has fumed at David Moyes’ insistence on trying to play defensive football with players who aren’t good enough as he insisted West Ham must sign two new defenders.
The former West Ham man insisted that the club still need to bring in two new centre-backs and a left-back – something he expects could cost “half the price” of a new forward
This comes following another injury to Nayef Aguerd which saw him miss the loss to Crystal Palace and draw with Liverpool, while the Hammers have conceded seven goals in their last three league games.
McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – has been outspoken in his frustration towards the current centre-back pairing at the London Stadium but called for them to prove him wrong.
“They keep buying players that are not fit. They need two centre-halves and a left-back. Emerson is alright when Paqueta is playing out on the left, they play well together,” McAvennie ranted.
“We’re a big team now, I’d like to see us have two good centre-halves. Why not? They’re half the price of a striker. It might be cruel to the centre-halves that are there but football is football, unless they prove me wrong.
“Prove to me you deserve to get the adulation of the fans because they’re backing you to the hilt. Just go and prove me wrong. Middle to front we’re different class but we can’t defend. Just get two good players that know what they’re doing and we’ve got the players that can go and play.
“David just wants no goals to go against them and I don’t understand how you can get that with the boys that are playing at the moment. I don’t understand what’s going to happen.“

This is not the first time McAvennie has called for the club to invest in the defensive positions as he previously insisted the arrival of a new back line should be the “priority” in the transfer market, with Alphonse Areola also tipped for an exit.
His criticism of the club’s centre-backs has continued, most recently claiming that the likes of Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen would be “fed up” with having to do so much work in helping out at the back as a result of their inconsistency.
The criticism for Moyes is nothing new either, with fans turning on the boss for his overly-defensive style of play given the players at his disposal, with McAvennie questioning what Moyes thinks he will get from his poor defenders having to sit back.
The future of David Moyes at West Ham United is unclear
With the likes of Harry Maguire, Mario Hermoso, Max Kilman and several other centre-backs having been linked with a move to the London Stadium this summer, it appears McAvennie is not the only one recognising the need for a change.
