Gianluca Scamacca has just made an extremely honest admission that will have the West Ham United fans spitting feathers. It was never a match made in heaven was it? The relationship between Gianluca Scamacca and West Ham manager David Moyes that is.
After signing the Italian striker for West Ham for around £35 million back in the summer of 2022, he was quickly shipped off to Atalanta a year later for a £13.5 million loss.
The 25-year-old has impressed back in Serie A, and has bagged 14 goals and four assists in 34 games for Atalanta so far this season (Transfermarkt).
Gianluca Scamacca admits that he committed the cardinal sin at West Ham. It was clear to see just how talented Scamacca was during his one-season spell at the London Stadium.
However, he frustrated the fans just as much as he thrilled us in equal measure. His attitude was definitely questionable at times.
That said, David Moyes’s formation, playing style and system definitely did not suit the former Sassuolo striker.
There will be those who suggest that he needed to work harder to fit into the Scot’s setup though.

And now, Scamacca has been really honest by candidly admitting a big faux pas that he made during his time with the Hammers…

The Italy international certainly looks rather too laid back when he’s playing. Sometimes Scamacca just looked like he couldn’t be bothered. He was famously criticised last year by his former teammate Michail Antonio, as quoted by talkSPORT:
“He is actually quality, he is a quality player. The problem is, he can not play the way the manager wants to play. He needs a different type of manager who will let him play with players to come off him and stuff like that. You see that, the ball comes to him, and it sticks. But with David Moyes, you have to feed off scraps, be a fighter… and he’s not that.”
He clearly wasn’t happy at the London Stadium, and on numerous occasions made no secret of his desire to return to Italy at some point (Metro).
Now the player himself has opened up on his approach during his West Ham days, and it doesn’t make for pretty reading…

“Since I arrived here, there has been a big change in the way I approach games, the amount I run, the intensity I put onto the pitch.”
So, the Italian is clearly admitting that he didn’t put in the hard yards when he played for the Hammers.
Nor was he as intense as he should have been on the pitch. It’s no surprise that he failed in the Premier League really is it!
The fact that he didn’t work as hard as he could have is unacceptable to me, and that non-committal approach will definitely come back to bite him at some stage in his career.
In my opinion, there is no worse trait in a footballer than a lack of effort and application.
Gianluca Scamacca is a very talented player, but he was always destined to be a failure at West Ham with an attitude like that.
