Fans will be furious when they hear what Stuart Pearce has said about David Moyes

Many West Ham fans will be furious when they hear what Stuart Pearce has said about David Moyes amid speculation over his future.

There was some surprise at West Ham when assistant coach Stuart Pearce announced he was leaving in May 2022.

At the time Pearce told the club’s official website he had decided “now is the right time to step away and pursue other opportunities and challenges”.

Mark Warburton was brought in to replace Pearce and duly left last summer after just one season. Another assistant coach, Paul Nevin, followed him out of the West Ham exit.

Warburton has gone on to candidly admit he had to leave or would have fallen out with “friend” David Moyes.

Pearce has yet to take up a post elsewhere.

Moyes admitted his deep regret at losing Pearce having also seen Alan Irvine step down in 2021.

And Pearce himself went on to open up on his West Ham departure, describing it as one of the toughest decisions he’s ever had to make in football.

Moyes looking increasingly likely to leave West Ham

Billy McKinlay, Xavi Valero, Kevin Nolan, John Heitinga, Mark Robson and Henry Newman now make up the backroom staff at West Ham.

But the future of Moyes himself is now very much in doubt beyond this summer.

Speculation is increasing that he will depart the Hammers when his contract expires this summer.

All the tell-tale signs are there that the Scot won’t be extending his deal.

Some sections of the West Ham fanbase remain divided over the subject of Moyes’ future beyond this season.

Despite the manager’s brilliant achievements in the last four years, there are two very contrasting camps when it comes to Moyes.

Some supporters want continuity and believe he deserves a new long-term deal.

They are just as entitled to their opinion as those craving a more progressive, expansive style and approach.

Those calling for change and many pundits and journalists have repeatedly warned West Ham fans to be ‘careful what they wish for’ over the manager.

It is a phrase that is like a red rag to a bull for many Hammers fans.

Some fans will be furious with what Pearce has said about Moyes

And it often shows a lack of appreciation for the uninspiring football that has been served up for much of the last two years.

Having been a player and assistant boss at West Ham in three different spells, Pearce knows the supporters, how they think and what they want and expect.

Therefore some West Ham fans will be furious when they hear what Pearce has said about Moyes and the club in general.

Pearce was speaking on the NoTippyTappyPod alongside another former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce.

And like fingers on a chalkboard he has jumped on the ‘careful what you wish for’ bandwagon.

Not only that but he has desecrated West Ham’s history too alongside a gleefully nodding Allardyce.

“I think West Ham have got a hang-up about style of play and they hark back to the 1970s team with rose-tinted glasses of Bobby Moore and Trevor Brooking and they think with what it says above the door ‘The Academy of Football’,” Pearce said.

“It’s something that I don’t think probably ever existed but people think it did.”

‘Be careful what you wish for’

“Listen I’m slightly biased, I’ve worked on the inside with Dave, I see the hard work he puts in.

“This is their third European campaign, they’ve got a third European trophy. I stood on the pitch, we trained on the pitch one day, and we looked up and over the hundred and however many years history (129) West Ham have got I think they had three trophies up on the awnings.

“And I said ‘It would be brilliant if you could put one up there’ and he has, you know.

“So over the period West Ham have existed since being the Thames Ironworks back in 18 whatever (1895), they’ve only ever won four trophies by the way and David has been part of that (West Ham have won seven major trophies including the War Cup).

“Three European campaigns, sixth and seventh in the league, they’re in the quarter-finals as you say now.

“They’ve had a final and a trophy lift, they’ve had a semi-finals – it’s quite a halcyon period and sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for because this fella has put his life and soul into that football club.”
