Kalvin Phillips makes a mockery of a sorry situation that has developed regarding Vladimir Coufal at West Ham. When West Ham signed Kalvin Phillips on loan from Man City many felt he was a player the club didn’t need.
If there was one area of the pitch West Ham were well stocked it was central midfield.
Reports claimed David Moyes was the one who pushed to sign Phillips. And it was claimed the move was against the wishes of some of the West Ham hierarchy.
It’s fair to say the move has not worked out thus far with things going from bad to worse for Phillips with every passing week.
A problem all of West Ham’s own making
His time with the Hammers hit a new low this week after he was officially named the lowest ranked midfielder in the Premier League.
As part of the loan agreement with Man City, West Ham are picking up Phillips’ £150k per week wages. That makes him the club’s joint-highest earner alongside Lucas Paqueta.
And Phillips makes a mockery of the sorry Vladimir Coufal situation at West Ham. Last night it was confirmed Coufal is unhappy about not being offered better terms by West Ham and is considering his future this summer.

One of the club’s most reliable, hard-working, consistent and professional players – not to mention one of its big leaders too – is currently on £35k per week.
And the club are unwilling to meet his demands as things stand.
Yes Coufal is 31. But can anybody possibly justify West Ham paying 28-year-old Phillips over FOUR times the salary the Czech warrior is on? It’s a sorry situation and does not reflect well on the club.
Coufal deserves to be among the club’s higher earners.
With Paqueta, he has backed up his big wage packet with performances on the pitch. And the Brazilian is also an £85m asset for West Ham.
Hammers must pay key star what he’s worth
But Phillips certainly has not been justifying his bumper wages as yet for the Hammers.
Moyes and co will be hoping that changes with Phillips in line for a huge chance in the starting XI as a result of Edson Alvarez being banned for three of the club’s next four games.
West Ham should reward Coufal for what he has brought to the club over the last four years.
He is closing on 150 appearances for the Irons. And the full-back is on course to break his own personal assist record in a season.
West Ham must pay important players their worth or it could cause problems in the dressing room in the future.
