David Moyes furious as West Ham controversially denied late winner against Aston Villa after long and VAR check

West Ham saw a precious winner against Aston Villa disallowed for a handball following a long VAR check.

The Hammers bundled the ball over the line deep in stoppage-time and wheeled away in celebration at a jubilant London Stadium.

A handball denied West Ham the three points

However, cheers turned to groans as the goal was checked for handball on the goal-line.

It seemed to take an age for those at Stockley Park to decide the course of action in east London.

Eventually, referee Jarred Gillett was then told to look at the screen.

And, upon observation, he decided that the goal could not stand.

West Ham couldn’t believe it, with boss David Moyes cutting an irked figure during a check that lasted around six minutes.

talkSPORT reporter Ian Abrahams branded the check as ‘ludicrous’ and Andy Townsend added: “Was he looking for handball or fingerprints?”

West Ham had seen an earlier goal from Michail Antonio also ruled out for handball, with the result just clearly not going their way.

Boos rang out at full-time, with Hammers fans clearly disgruntled with their misfortune late in the game.

Referee Gillett was told to look at the screen to add to the late drama

It’s the second consecutive Premier League game at home that West Ham have dropped points following their 2-2 draw against Burnley.

The point could prove key for Villa in their quest to qualify for the Champions League next season.
