West Ham United v Brentford: Sky pundit ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ by David Moyes

Sue Smith is expecting West Ham to pick up a victory against Brentford in order to lift some of the uncertainty over the future of David Moyes.

Moyes confirmed last week that he has been offered a new contract at London Stadium, but he is holding off from making a decision for now.

It comes at a time when United are on an eight-game winless run to begin 2024, losing the last three of those by an aggregate 11-0 scoreline.

However, Smith believes the visit of Brentford on Monday (26 February) is exactly the type of game Moyes has a habit of winning.

“We keep saying Moyes is under pressure but he’s always been able to get results when needed,” she told Sky Sports News [26 February, 12:11pm].

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes and gets a positive result tonight.”

David Moyes future at West Ham United still uncertain

The reason Moyes has not already put pen to paper on the contract he has been awarded is because of this terrible run of form.

Even if the Scotsman has plenty of backers, the overall reception would be negative should he commit his future to West Ham right now.

Had he done so on the back of the wins over Manchester United and Arsenal in December, the situation would have been a lot different.

That is not to say the fanbase was overwhelmingly behind Moyes at that point, but there was far less reason to kick off over the new deal.

West Ham boss David Moyes at the London Stadium

David Moyes has found himself under increasing pressure at West Ham United.

As it is, United desperately need to stop the rot. The longer this run goes on, the more chance there is of the season badly petering out.

There is the small matter of the Europa League, of course, but on current form there is no way West Ham are beating Freiburg again.

This visit of Brentford, with a fit Lucas Paqueta now available, seems like an ideal opportunity to finally turn things around before it is too late.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have been tipped to possibly move for a manager from a Premier League rival.
