Andy Irving was a really strange signing for West Ham last summer, after David Moyes brought the midfielder from SK Austria Klagenfurt to the London Stadium on transfer deadline day, and then immediately loaned him back to the Austrian club. Last season, the 24-year-old midfielder suggested that it was his dream to play for West Ham in the Premier League.
That seemed a little far fetched at the time, but Julen Lopetegui gave the Scot plenty of chances to shine during the friendly games this summer.
West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse recently admitted that he has been really impressed by Irving during pre-season.
He actually looked decent at times, and even scored a wonder goal during our win away at Dagenham back in July. However, Irving still seems to me like he’s a long way off being Premier League quality. That said, one of the best clubs in Europe are apparently looking to sign him this summer.

The Scot’s days at the London Stadium could well be numbered. That’s no surprise in itself really is it, but I’m shocked by the club being linked with a move to sign him.
They are one of the best teams in European football, so if they want him, Irving must have something about him right? According to a report from Edinburgh Evening News, Atalanta want to sign Irving, and the Italians have actually made a formal enquiry for him.
The Serie A side won the Europa League last season, beating Bayer Leverkusen in the final, so they’re widely considered to be one of the best teams on the planet. They will be playing Champions League football this season after their Europa League success last term.
So, the former Hearts man could be set to link up with Gianluca Scamacca out in Italy – I never thought I’d be saying that! The Italy international joined West Ham from Sassuolo in the summer of 2022 for around £35 million, but his career at the London Stadium never got started.
His was painfully ill-suited to David Moyes’s system, and the Scot shipped him out of the club at the first opportunity. According to the Daily Mail, Atalanta paid £27 million, including add-ons, to prise Scamacca away from the London Stadium last summer.
And now Andy Irving could be set to link up with the former West Ham striker out in Italy. What a huge shock transfer that would be, if it happens of course.
